There are also 9 oblique weights that follow the same properties as the regular nine. The final weight of the typeface is a chromatic that contains all the weights of Apt in one, this can be expanded to make a wide range of chromatic letters.
A key use for this typeface is to illustrate emphasis or importance in written language.
This book was created to exhibit its versatility.

Unlike other typefaces the weights of Apt are not constrained with Bold, Extra Bold, Condensed etc. It features weights One to Nine in which One has the thinnest strokes with the largest counters and Nine has the thickest strokes with the smallest counters. This came from the process of its creation starting with a mono line regular weight being Six, then expanding and decreasing the thickness to create the other weights

The lowercase needed to have a higher X height than most typefaces so as not to diminish the counters on the bolder weights, to conform with the same properties as the Uppercase of Apt and to keep the starting weight of six mono line to allow it to be systematically decreased and expanded to create the other nine weights.

As each letter decrease in weight the Cap height, X-height and Baseline follow accordingly. This assures that every corresponding letter of each weight is contained within the larger weights and all the letters of each weight follow
the same axis.

APT by Viktor Koen is series of alphabet prints, inspired by armed conflict. It is one of his many illustrated typefaces. “I wanted to design for a while now,” he says, “and unfortunately, it became current and very urgent.”

He adds that these are not images about the beauty of weaponry, “but a commentary on its uses, results, sale, and distribution. The use of arms and armor throughout covers a wide but random chronology of man killing man. Random, because it made no sense adhering to any kind of order when it comes to something so senseless.”

The letters molded from weaponry is a vivid connection between the horrors of war and our daily vernacular. “Reporting, describing, and discussing conflict related death is a casual part of our routine,” he says, “even if we are physically so distant from it.” Koen adds, when many years ago, he asked his grandfather Barouch Sevi, a World War II veteran, about war, “I expected a movie like description of guts and glory. He only said it was filthy and spoke no more about it. Maybe this explains the fact that these letters are not shiny tributes to military technology, but a fusion of rusted metal and broken bones.”

In June 2011 “Warphabet” was showcased in the Irene Gellery, Cyprus (an exhibition organized by the Department of Design & Multimedia, University of Nicosia) and will be exhibited in the Coningsby Gallery in London this September, Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas Gallery/HAU, Athens, Greece in November and Kalos&Klio Showroom, in Thessaloniki, Greece, May 2012. When I enquired about the price, I was firmly told it might be for sale, but only if the price was very right (she also pointed out her equally spectacular shoes, the design of which happened to be based on the Eames chair / letter X on the poster). Though disappointed, I can’t say I’m too surprised at her unusually uncommercial attitude, as Tim’s work is rather splendid. As it seems it’ll be a little longer before I’ll have a Fishlock original on my wall, I thought the next best thing might be to share Tim’s alphabet posters with the Typetoken readers.

Origami Alphabet Relief (top) is a 3 dimensional alphabet constructed by hand using paper and then photographed. Each of the litho prints is hand embossed, numbered and signed by the artist. Limited edition run of 300.

Shapeset (second from top) makes up the letters of the alphabet using basic primitive shapes, combined and layered in a variety of colours. It’s glicee printed on archival stock, hand embossed, numbered and signed by the artist. Limited edition run of 75.

A to Z (second from bottom) takes sections of Harry Beck’s classic London Underground map and presents them as the letters of the alphabet – an altogether different kind of A to Z map.

Typeseat (bottom) makes up the alphabet from chairs and stools, viewed from selected angles and selected from 20th century design classics, such as the Eames chair mentioned previously. The limited run of 300 prints is sadly sold out, as I suspect the others may also be by the time you read this. Get in quick!

-

<a
